There are times when groups of people see angels at the same time. It is also true that there are times that whole groups of people are not sure of what they see in reference to angelic ministry. In other words, it is possible to discern what we see or experience incorrectly. One very famous ministry leader once thought that God was visiting him. As he was seeking God in his new apartment, he saw a light appear in his closet over several days as he was fasting and praying. The closet doors had slats in them and the “supernatural light” came through the louvers. He bowed down in the fear of the Lord and worshiped the light. (He has often shared this testimony publicly.)
He said he felt quite foolish later when he discovered that the “supernatural light” was not the Lord at all. Rather, he discovered that the light on the water heater would periodically turn on to warm up the water. However, what he discerned to be God was just a LED light on the water heater! Therefore, we need to guard our hearts and learn to develop our spiritual discernment (1 Corinthians 2:14).
A Mysterious Star Appears
One of the well documented angelic visitations that was witnessed by a large group of people happened on June 11, 1933. About 2 p.m. an estimated 1,000 people were gathered at the Ohio River at the end of Spring Street in Jeffersonville, Indiana, to watch new converts being baptized. As the minister was baptizing the seventeenth person (Edward Colvin), many people witnessed a yellow, green, and amber fireball falling from heaven. This heavenly being emitted a roaring sound and was radiating sparks and flames. In addition to this, the angel also disturbed and churned up the water of the Ohio River sending a fine midst of water into the air that reflected the colors of the rainbow around the ball of light. Some people described the supernatural light as a star.
The star appeared to then hover over the minister, and the angelic visitor spoke an audible message to the large crowd there on the riverbank. Many people panicked and ran. Others bowed down, and still others fainted. Of course, giving messages is the very nature of God’s angels and the Greek word for angel is aggelos, which means “messenger” (see Strong’s Greek Reference #32). Not everyone heard the message that the heavenly visitor spoke that day. An estimated one minute after this angel appeared, it shot back into the heavenly places from whence it came. Once the crowd settled down, the minister continued to baptize people until an estimated 200 people were baptized. The next morning the local newspaper ran an article about this supernatural angelic visitation with the accompanying headline: “Mysterious Star Appears Over Minister While Baptizing.”1
Two Supernatural Angelic Encounters
Not all angelic visitations that are experienced by groups of people are as dramatic as the last example. Here is another example. In 2008, Kathy Basconi and I experienced a series of supernatural encounters in Moravian Falls, North Carolina. As I like to share at our Schools of the Seers, at times our experiences can be “teachable moments” for others. This next testimony is an example of a “teachable moment” and it is also entertaining.
Remember that scripture encourages us like this: “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels”(Hebrews 13:2). People often seek to entertain or search for angels. (Some folk travel extensively to Moravian Falls to entertain angels). This is not always wise, but it is certainly scriptural. Kathy and I had been in our log home (there in West Meadows just out side of Moravian Falls, North Carolina) for about 120 days. I was resting in the Lord in my prayer room one day when the Lord released an unction of the Holy Spirit upon me (1 John 2:20, KJV). I had a supernatural knowing that I should travel over the mountain and up upon the Prayer Mountain.
As we were leaving our neighbor, Wayne from Cincinnati, stopped by and we invited him to go up on the prayer mountain with us. Since the road to Prayer Mountain is rather steep, we parked near the bottom and walked up to the prayer deck on the top. It was a nice seasonable day and the leaves were blowing around us as we covered the last 200 yards or so to the prayer deck on foot.
Revelation by Vision
When we were getting close I saw that there was a group of three men on the prayer deck. Kathy suggested that we walk on by and walk down the mountain a little ways past the men and the prayer deck. However, as we started to pass the Holy Spirit spoke to me and said; “These men are the reason that I have called you here today.” So I told Kathy and Wayne that we were supposed to go over and minister to these men. As it turned out, the Holy Spirit intervened and our group began to minister to these three visitors to the area. They had come from South Carolina, as they had heard that people often have angelic encounters in Moravian Falls. When they searched the Internet, they found out about Prayer Mountain and decided to go there “searching for angels.” As I started to pray for the men, I discerned that one of God’s angels had moved to stand behind me. The atmosphere on the prayer deck became electric, and it was obvious to everyone that something supernatural was happening.
Supernatural Glory
As often happens when this angel is near, the Holy Spirit supernaturally gave me revelation of the secrets of these men’s hearts. This revelation was in part “the still small voice” of the Holy Spirit and in part revelation by spiritual vision. The revelation was a combo meal. As the vision unfolded before me, I saw certain aspects of these men’s lives and then just related what I saw to them. As Kathy, Wayne, and I prayed for them and ministered to them prophetically, they began to weep and were also powerfully touched by the power and presence of the Holy Spirit.
We demonstrated the love of God to them and stayed with them for about one-half hour after we prayed for them just fellowshipping and discussing the goodness of God and His angelic hosts. At that point we just walked back down the mountain the way that we had come. The three of us were laughing and praising God as we crunched through the crisp golden leaves on the ground. I could have sworn that I also heard other footsteps walking behind us as we departed Prayer Mountain. It seemed to me that the smell of honeysuckle and frankincense was lingering in the cool mountain air wafting around the three of us too.
Getting into Glory
Three weeks later I was once again resting in the Lord in my prayer room in our log home there in Moravian Falls. I began to feel the heavens stir and once again the unction of the Holy Spirit rose up in me. I had a supernatural leading or knowing that Kathy and I were supposed to go back up on Prayer Mountain. By now it was about 2 p.m. on a gorgeous sunny day in Moravian Falls, North Carolina. I told Kathy what I was feeling from the Lord. She immediately agreed to go. We both prepared ourselves and got into Glory. (You remember Glory, don’t you? Glory is our Ford Explorer with the license place “Psalm 24.”) We traveled a few miles up to the gravel road leading to Prayer Mountain and the prayer deck there. The higher we climbed, the stronger the glory became. No, I am not speaking of our Ford; I am literally speaking about the tangible presence and glory (kabowd) of the Lord (God’s glory)!
Somehow I knew that the Holy Spirit was taking us to another a divine appointment. I was right. I pulled Glory up to the end of the gravel road and parked there on Prayer Mountain. Kathy and I got out and began to saunter over to the prayer deck. Once again there were people there already, and Kathy once again wanted to walk right on by. Once again the Holy Spirit would not allow me to move past and I told Kathy as much. So, we turned down the little path and walked down the stone walkway to the prayer deck. On this afternoon there were four people there on the prayer deck.
I was not surprised to find that it was the same three men we had met there three weeks earlier. The main guy or leader of these four looked at us like he had seen a ghost! Only this time they had a fourth man with them who was sitting there with his head down. He was wearing a blue windbreaker. I had “seen” that blue windbreaker before when I prayed fro them one the first occasion. I immediately realized that I had seen this man three weeks earlier in a vision while standing on the prayer deck ministering to his other three friends. I had seen him with his head bowed in this same hooded jacket just like this three weeks ago even though he was not on the prayer deck that day. Once again, it was revelation by vision and the Lord began to refresh my mind with the previous vision. At the same instant I sensed one of the Lord’s angels moving closer to stand behind me once again.
Part Two
Searching for Angels
The hair on my left arm stood on end, and I was taken into one of the same visions that I had seen three weeks earlier. Only this time the revelation I was receiving was much more detailed. As the men and Kathy spoke, I just focused on the vision and sought to remember every detail that I was seeing in the spirit concerning the fourth man. (Again, I was spiritually multitasking.) I knew that these men had returned to Moravian Falls from South Carolina with their friend and were hoping to see us again. They had been on the prayer deck most of the morning. The main guy continued to stare at Kathy and me with a weird look in his eyes. I also knew by revelation that the Holy Spirit had told him that if they came back, they would, indeed, see Kathy and me. He was also told by the Holy Spirit that we would have a prophetic word for the fourth man (the man with the blue windbreaker) that would really help him through a rough time and bring healing into his broken heart and spirit.
After some small talk the one man said these exact same things, and that was the open door to share what I had seen in the vision. Everything that I shared from the vision was 100 percent accurate (according to the man’s testimony). As I prayed for the fourth man, he received a physical healing and was set free from emotional bondage. He began to weep as the anointing of the Holy Spirit was washing over him and setting him free. Again, there seemed to be the fragrance of honeysuckle and frankincense wafting about us on the prayer deck.
Two Angels on Prayer Mountain
Finally, he pulled back his hood and we saw him smile for the first time. He was amazed that I knew the details of his situation. The Lord had given me a very detailed work of knowledge fro him. Knowing the secrets of his heart made him feel safe and secure that the things we were sharing with him were of God. You see, He was not sure about his relationship with the Lord, or traveling up to a weird place in the mountains of North Carolina. In fact, he was not walking with Jesus at the time. But by God’s grace, he started walking closer to Jesus after the prayer and ministry time on Prayer Mountain.
The presence and glory of God began to wash over the prayer deck as the man was receiving his healing and deliverance. The glory increased and peaked as the man began to praise the Lord for his healing. I sensed that it was time for Kathy and me to descend the mountain (mission completed). We said our goodbyes. The leader of these four continued to look at Kathy and me with a wide-eyed crazy expression that made me wonder what he was thinking. We shook hands with them all. The man with the blue windbreaker insisted on hugging us too. It seemed that he held on to me as long as he could. When we broke our embrace, I looked into his green eyes and saw Jesus. I knew that he had just experienced a life changing encounter there on Prayer Mountain. In my spirit I praised Jesus and gave Him all the glory. Kathy and I turned and walked back up the little stone walkway and started to head down the path to Glory (the Ford Explorer).
Discerning the Holy from the Profane
Suddenly the leader of these four men ran after me and Kathy. He still had that excited and crazy look in his eyes. His eyes were wide open, and he blurted out, “I just gotta ask you one more question before you go!” I said, “Sure, what is it?” He said, “You’re driving a truck!” “Yes!” I said, “That is Glory.” His gaze grew even more animated and distraught (if that were possible). It seemed as if he were struggling to find the right words. So, I was very interested to hear what he was going to say next. It seemed like the presence of the Holy Spirit was falling upon us at that moment like a gentle rain. I thought to myself, “This is going to be good!” Suddenly the man blurted out: “You’re not angels, are you?” His eyes were now wide open, and he gazed at Kathy and me with both fascination and intrigue. He was serious, and so was I. (I can understand why he might think that Kathy was an angel. She looks like one of God’s angels, but me?)
I answered him, “No, we are just friends of God. The Lord sent us here to minister to you because of your prayers and your faith.” We embraced for a moment and patted one another on the back. It seemed to me that he was squeezing me to check and see if I was real—you know, tangible and not angelic. I could tell that he was not sure or was having a difficult time believing what I had just said. He really wanted to believe that we were two of God’s angels there on Prayer Mountain. Our eyes locked for a moment and I smiled at him. His green eyes seemed to fall a bit as the reality of the situation finally sunk in. Then a crazy smile creased his face, and he said, “Well, I didn’t think that angels drove trucks. So that really threw me for a minute. But I really thought that you guys were angels the last time that we met you here.”
“You were right,” he said. “I told my friend that if he came with us, we would probably see you guys (angels), and that he would get a touch from God. So, I got that part right anyway.” I smiled at him, and we all laughed for a moment. As I was leaving, I encouraged him by saying, “By the way, there are a lot of God’s angels around here on Prayer Mountain! Keep looking! Keep Believing! But remember, the most important thing is Jesus. Right?” He smiled as he turned to rejoin his friends and responded, “Right!”
The Keys to Glory
Kathy and I got into Glory to descend the mountain (Glory now resides in Arizona with our friends Chuck and Michelle). I turned the key and Glory roared to life. I smiled and thought to myself, “That was one of the most amazing complements that anyone has ever given me!” He compared us to one of God’s angels; and in fact, his whole group actually believed that we were angels for three weeks! I suppose in a way we were functioning like one of God’s angels for a few moments there on Prayer Mountain, at least to those men from South Carolina. We certainly delivered a timely message from God to those guys!
Christ in You
Thinking back on it now, there was the time in Kelowna, British Columbia, at the Key of David Worship event. The Holy Spirit had told me to go and touch a man kneeling at the altar and smile at him. That seemed easy enough. When I touched the man on his shoulder, he turned around to look at me and he also got the same kind of “crazy look” on his face and he eyes took on a look of wonder. His eyes twinkled and immediately he burst into tears and began to repent and call out to Jesus for salvation. Later he came to me privately and said, “I have been backslidden for several years. I was just praying to the Lord and told Him if He was real to reveal Himself to me. That is when I turned around to see who had touched my shoulder. When I looked at your face, I literally saw Jesus standing there. You looked just like the Lord smiling at me.” I suppose that is the most wonderful complement that I have ever received. It was a “Christ in you, the hope of glory instant” (Colossians 1:27).
The reason that I am adding this last part is to encourage you. You see, it is true; it is literally possible that you may be the only Jesus that a person will ever see. So if the Lord leads you to do a simple act, don’t be hesitant to do it. Your obedience combined with the precious Holy Spirit can work together to transform a person’s life, whether it is on top a mountain or at a worship event. Let the Light of the world shine through you.
There is a teachable moment in these supernatural scenarios. We need to learn to discern. No matter what we discern about another person, this information needs to be applied with and through the love of God. Fortunately for the men on Prayer Mountain, we were being led by the Holy Spirit and blessed them. Remember that Jesus Himself said even the very elect might be deceived in the last days (Matthew 24:24). We need to learn to discern the Holy from the profane. When it comes to angelic visitations, you need to guard your heart and develop your spiritual discernment by reason of use. Because solid food belongs to those who are mature in Christ; that is those who have been diligent to use, develop, and exercise their spiritual senses enabling them to discern both the good (angelic realm) and the evil (demonic realms) (Hebrews 5:14). You see, both exist. However, God can and will protect you when you are walking in right relationship with Him. He can empower you and give you authority over every evil spirit or fallen angel (Luke 9:1). In closing, allow me to say that you need to employ wisdom should you choose to go searching for angels.
Prayer of Activation
Father, I thank You for the wonderful saints reading this now. I pray right now, Lord, and I ask that You would fill us with the knowledge of Your will for each of us. Lord, I ask that You would release to us wisdom and spiritual understanding. Father, I’m asking that You would help us to discern, to see, to taste, to smell, to touch the unseen realm. I ask, Father God, in Jesus’ name, that You would give us spiritual understanding. I cover each of us in the blood of Jesus. I ask You, Father God, that we would see nothing except what You would have us to see; that we would have no visions, no dreams, no trances, no supernatural encounters except those that were ordained by God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. And, Lord, I thank You that the heavens are open in this place, right now (where every you may be reading this today).
Lord, Your angels are welcome to descend even now to minister for those who are heirs of salvation. Father, we thank You that it is fully pleasing to You that each of us would be fruitful in every good work and that we would increase in the knowledge of You.
Father, I ask You today that we would be strengthened with Your might and Your glorious power. Father, I thank You that we are already qualified through the blood of Jesus Christ and the finished work of the Cross to be partakers of our heavenly inheritance as saints of light. Lord, I ask that You would convey us even now into the invisible realms of the Kingdom of Your Son, the Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Help me to discern and entertain heaven right now, Lord.
Father, I just thank You that we have an inheritance of light that we can access through the finished work of Jesus Christ on the Cross. Father, we thank You that the Cross of Jesus is the bridge that opens up the heavenly places to us. And, Lord, I thank You that we are seated in the heavenly places with Christ Jesus. Lord, we give You the praise and the honor and the glory for everything You’ve done, everything You are doing, and everything You are going to do, in Jesus’ mighty name, amen.
